Head Coach

Description: The Head Coach/Manger will work with the team officers to ensuring the policies and procedures of the AS/SDSU Sports Club program are adhered to by the members and coaching staff of the Rugby club team. Responsibilities of the Head Coach/Manager include: player recruitment; recruiting, supervising, and evaluating all volunteer/paid coaching staff; assist with the planning and coordination of practice and game scheduling; team travel; fiscal management; and the promotion and marketing of the Rugby program. This position requires flexibility for evening and weekend work.

General Information: With an enrollment of more than 29,000 students, San Diego State University is located just 15 minutes from downtown San Diego, the beach, and 5 minutes from Qualcomm Stadium. Noted for its mild climate year-round, San Diego enjoys average temperatures in the low to mid-70s. The Rugby club team is a component of the Associated Students/Sports Club Program of San Diego State University.

SDSU Aztec Rugby was founded in 1958 when a group of athletes interested in trying the other code of football gathered in the Aztec Bowl, in an attempt to introduce to SDSU a new and exciting sport. Their first season was a Cinderella one as they clinched the conference title. They were a fiercely competitive and tight group in their early years, as they worked hard to lay down the roots of Aztec Rugby on campus, which also led to the on field success. This winning tradition has continued and flourished to include numerous conference titles as well as the Collegiate National Championship in 1987.

Required Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to recruit, train, and evaluate college student athletes; strong coaching background with an emphasis on skill development and leadership; excellent written and oral communication skills; 1-2 years experience coaching and/or playing within a competitive league; proficient computer skills. Must have or be able to attain AED, CPR and First-Aid certifications through the American Red Cross or another nationally recognized organization.

Compensation: $15.00 per hour

Duration: Ten month contractual appointment (renewed annually).

Assistant Coach

San Diego State Rugby Team coach is responsible for all the specific coaching duties relative to the sport he coaches and the managerial aspects of his job.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Annually for the duration of the sport season in which he is coaching.

REPORTS TO: Sports Club Coordinator and Rugby Team Officers

QUALIFICATIONS: * Demonstrated knowledge and successful experience in rugby as well as has ability to improve rugby skills. * Excellent interpersonal skills and high expectations for teamwork, exemplary behavior, and responsibility. * Ability to mentor and lead young people by example. * Experience and/or demonstrated success in supervising young adults and managing programs. * Commitment to excellence of our team and the sport in general. * Never accepting anything less than an overall want to keep improving the program.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: * Direct total program from the aspects of a coach: practice, games, tournaments, and recruiting. * Keep practice and games enjoyable in order to keep participation high and success on the field and overall goal. * Oversee that the president of the club is doing his job and help him keep the club fulfilling club regulations and guide lines. * Help in the recruitment of more coaches as well as appoint a captain, * Help the president complete all student eligibility documents. * Work directly with players to increase rugby skill as well as oversee other coaches and plan to attain an overall goal. * Attend all staff meetings called by the Sports Club Coordinator. * Have a well defined practice plan for all practices. * Properly store of all equipment, uniforms, and supplies pertaining to the rugby team. * Refer all scheduling requests to the club president so he can communicate regarding any games, competitions, or outings that are postponed or changed. * Submit end of season results: records, award winners, and any additional awards to the Sports Club Coordinator.
