San Diego State University is pleased to announce SDSU alumni Alex Lichtig has signed on as the next head coach of Aztec Rugby. With Matt Hawkins stepping away to continue his pursuit of full time international rugby sevens, the Aztecs began the search for a new coach at the start of summer. Luckily, it did not take long to find a candidate with the enthusiasm, dedication and rugby knowledge to take SDSU to the next level. Alex Lichtig brings both his personal SDSU rugby knowledge and international experience, from his time playing in North Shore New Zealand for the legendary Buck Shelford. Arriving with coach Lichtig are a cast of fellow All Americans including forwards coach, Joe Fontana; tight five specialist, Brendan Purcell; and strength and conditioning authority, Alex Ross. Alex Lichtig had this to say, “I am excited to take on the role of head coach at SDSU and am looking forward to the challenge. This is truly a great time to be involved with the Aztec Rugby program and I am confident we can capitalize on opportunities to succeed both long and short term.” SDSU is pleased to announce that the administrative dealings of selecting new leadership for the team is over. Aztec Rugby is ready to return to what it does best; Rugby!
